After
freezin' our bollox off at the seats at the back of The Point,
The Datsuns decided to set up stage when they should've been playin'!!
More waiting!! When they did kick off they put on an energetic
show and seemed to get the crowd going ok. Not my kinda band but
the lead guitarist can play alright even though each lead break
turned into the same solo?? - Maybe that's just me. Anyhow I didn't
hear anything to make me rush out and buy their stuff. I suppose
it Passed a half hour anyway.
VR hit the stage under the banner 'Rock 'n Fuckin Roll' after
a G'n'R style intro from an announcer. As expected Slash gets
the biggest roar as the band appear one by one, before ripping
into 'Sucker Train Blues' whilst blinding the crowd with strobes.
'Do it for the Kids' and 'Headspace' followed with the crowd in
full voice right from song 1, line 1. Weiland came complete with
an Axl style WW2
German officer hat as sported by the latter in the famous 'Live
at the Roxy' video (Piss take?) and a loudhailer used to belt
them out. Superhuman next up, followed by the Stone Temple Pilots
(ST) song 'Crackerman' and the manic 'Dirty Little Thing'. 'Illegal
I Song' broke out into a full blown Slash solo on the voxbox.
The pace slowed a little but certainly not the energy levels for
'Fall To Pieces', quickly stepping right back up for 'LovingThe
Alien' and 'Big Machine'. The crowd went ape at the intro to 'It's
So Easy'. "If you liked that one you'll love this one"
sez Duff - The band then broke into STP's 'Sex Type Thing' which
rocked the house. The set completed with 'Set Me Free' before
the band left for a breather.
They
howled for more and they got it - semi unplugged - 'Yesterday's'
intro teased us but in came 'Used To Love Her' with a bluesy acoustic
solo before 'You Got No Right' complete with Slash in top hat
and twin neck. And then they left again.
Again they howled - we all knew Slither was to come but the roof
nearly lifted as Sorum started the drum intro to G 'n' R's 'You
Could be Mine' but no.... up came 'Mr Brownstone' !! The crowd
went mental and the band finally completed the night with 'Slither'.
A frantic end to a manic
night.
Weiland was superb, Slash was - well - Slash!, Duff strutted as
Duff does, Sorum was faultless and the guy nobody talks about,
Kushner, was excellent. The stage/lights was top and the energy
levels were sky high throughout. A great Rock 'n' fuckin' Roll
show and a brilliant start to the year.
