THIN LIZZY, THE OLYMPIA, DUBLIN, 28/07/03

The 'Wild Ones' gang arrived at the bar next door to the Olympia at 7 o'clock for a few Dublin stouts to loosen up but more importantly to meet up with Phil Lynott's mother Philomena. We were then taken past the queue outside the venue and straight up into Philomena's VIP box which was perfectly positioned just above the stage giving us the best view of the proceedings that were to follow. After being introduced to friends of Philomena we took our seats and got ready for the show.

First up were the support band who were called 'The Things', I think that they are from Dublin with a sound that reminded me of 'The Doors' only with distortion. They got the crowd going nicely and got a good response. After they left the stage the atmosphere began to build and as the roadies were testing the mics and preparing the instruments the familiar 'Lizzy' chant began. At this time 3 other dates were announced for later Oct/Nov in Dublin, Cork and Belfast which only added to the already charged mood.

JOHN SYKES AND SCOTT GORHAM9 o'clock struck and the sirens wailed. The boys appeared on stage to an unbelievable welcome and went straight into that familiar 'E' chord of Jailbreak. The new rhythm section of drummer Michael Lee (Little Angels, The Cult, Page Plant) and bass player Gary Leiderman obviously fitted like a glove and were pumping the music out nicely. John Sykes who was handling lead vocals and Guitar looked very happy and sounded brilliant.

The hits were whipped out one after the other; Waiting For An Alibi, Don't Believe A Word, Cold Sweat and for me the highlight of the night…Still In Love With You with two blistering solos from Sykes and the legend that is Scott Gorham. Here is no keyboard player on this tour and to be honest they were barely missed on 'When the Sun Goes Down' with JOHN SYKES AND SCOTT GORHAMGorham covering nicely with sounds from his Strat. I thought it was refreshing to hear songs from the 'Chinatown' album and the crowd seemed to agree as they sang along with 'Killer On The Loose'

It was great to see that as the night went on, the crowd got louder and louder especially when the band played 'The Cowboy Song' and 'The Boys Are Back In Town' back to back, after that there was no stopping them. We were then treated to 3 encores namely 'Black Rose', Suicide' and 'Emerald'. The boys truly were back in town, a bit older, a bit greyer but still more than able to Rock.JOHN SYKES

The night ended with Philomena getting one of the biggest cheers of the night. After that it was time for morestout this time backstage (see Photos page).

A VERY BIG THANKYOU TO PHILOMENA AND GRAHAM FOR A VERY SPECIAL NIGHT.
