Any regular
visitors to this site's FORUMS
will be aware that early Genesis have a large following. News that
founder member Steve Hackett was releasing a classical guitar album
was met with interest. One of these fans Dave
McReynolds shares his thoughts on that very
album.
"Tribute"
by Steve Hackett is a classical guitar album released in the 11th
of February 2008. It 'is a continuing expression of Steve's fascination
with the classical guitar, and homage to the composers and performers
who have inspired him.'
Steve
Hackett is known to be one of Britons finest composers and guitarists.
He began in the early 70's as a session guitarist. He has since
developed his musical identity and has become quite something to
be reckoned with.
As a self-taught guitarist and classical musician, I can say that
"Tribute" is a display of sheer talent and virtuosity.
Unlike most displays of such flair on guitar, this sounds especially
good.
The album features thirteen guitar solos; music by Bach, Barrios,
Byrd, Granados and three inventions by Hackett himself. Anyone with
a taste for classical guitar, or even just classical music would
definitely be influenced by "Tribute." I certainly have.
I found this album beautifully mellow and relaxing. Hackett captures
a true classical feel in his performance and simultaneously exhibits
amazing technique. He has quite clearly mastered his instrument.
His choice of music and own compositions are memorable and elegant.
Through all of these solos, he has achieved success in his music.
Hackett proves his worth in the classical world, boasting an appearance
as a featured soloist with the London Chamber Orchestra, performing
Vivaldi's Guitar Concerto. In his 'acoustic' tour, he was one of
only two artistes who had sold out London's prestigious Barbican
Concerto Hall in a particular year. The other was the London Symphony
Orchestra!
As if these achievements weren't enough, Steve further proves his
worth in writing 'timeless pieces.' He was given the seal of approval
from Yehudi Menuhin, when Menuhin used a theme for a television
documentary.
In the world of rock guitar, Steve shows amazing credibility, having
fronted the "Guitar Wars" line-up, alongside John Paul
Jones of Led Zeppelin, Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme, and Paul Gilbert
of Mr. Big and Racer X.
Hackett shows a unique ability to master the musical spectrum.
This has earned him the respect and envy of both rock musicians
as well as classical performers.
I expect "Tribute" to be a success in the classical world.
It is an album of virtuosity and talent matched by few. It makes
for a smooth listen, filled with feeling.
